Description

"Silica and Noise Exposures at a Stone Product Facility"
This case study examines employee overexposures to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and noise in a facility that manufactures stone monuments and headstones. The presenter will review the work operations, summarize the observed airborne and physical hazards, and discuss the sampling methods and equipment used, as well as the abatement and controls implemented by the employer. OSHA documented RCS overexposures at 2.7 times the permissible exposure limit (PEL). The case study will also address OSHA's National Emphasis Program on Respirable Crystalline Silica.

"Toxic Exposure to Mercury During Power Plant Demolition"
This case study focuses on employee overexposures to mercury during the dismantling of mercury boilers. It will review the situational description of the deconstruction, summarize the observed hazards, and discuss the sampling methods and equipment used, as well as the support from OSHA's Health Response Team. The case will cover the abatement measures and controls implemented by the employer. OSHA documented mercury overexposures at 17 times the permissible exposure limit (PEL), noted contaminated food and beverage consumption areas, identified dermal mercury exposures, and highlighted hazards with the an incomplete respirator program and practices.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Recognize hazards in the subject work operations.
• Conduct an exposure assessment for the identified hazards.
• Choose appropriate controls to mitigate the hazards.
• Describe OSHA's approach to conducting inspections for workplace safety and health issues.
