N2: Better Learning With Groups and Games
Wed, 6/3: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT
Education Sessions
Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Convention Center
Room: 288
CM Credit Hours: 1
Research has long shown that lecture based methods are less than ideal for learning, yet we continue to turn to them as a common training modality.
Groups allow learners to tackle more complex problems when working together, and articulation of ideas deepens their understanding and stimulates their own thinking. They also cultivate competencies such as communication, accountability, conflict resolution, and teamwork – all highly valued skills. Finally, groups can help learners feel more invested and supported in the learning process.
Games can substantially increase learner engagement and enjoyment. Gamification can boost memory retention and allow for more personalized learning experiences. Finally, games can simulate real-world problems in a safe environment that allows for experimentation and supports the process of learning through failure.
Participants in this session will observe and experience a selection of simple ways to use groups and games to enhance learning. We will demonstrate how a deck of playing cards can be used to form groups and facilitate various group exercises, including "Fishbowl", "Jigsaw", "Role Play", and "Coaching Cards" activities. We will also demonstrate how to incorporate gamification in simple but impactful ways that increase cooperation, competition, and engagement.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Use playing cards in two different ways to increase engagement.
• Communicate three ways to use groups to improve learning.
• Describe three ways to gamify training.
• Use the provided handout to plan and implement a group exercise or game for training.
