This professional development course will help participants strengthen their leadership people skills, with a focus on emotional intelligence and conflict management. Through a combination of lecture, group discussion and role-playing, attendees will compare effective and ineffective leadership behaviors, collaborate to solve workplace challenges and develop a personalized action plan.
Participants may submit questions or workplace scenarios prior to the course, though this is optional. Submissions will be sanitized for confidentiality as needed.
While the course emphasizes emotional intelligence and conflict management, other essential skills—such as communication, problem-solving, team leadership, time management, adaptability, creativity and working under pressure—will be woven throughout the session.
*Registration includes boxed luncheon. **Power strips will not be provided at each attendee's seat; however, laptop charging stations will be provided in each course room.

Note: Throughout the course, attendee-provided examples from the optional pre-course input request will be woven into discussions.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• List leadership people skills and recognize their criticality to their own career success.
• Apply role-playing experiences to improve their people leadership skills.
• Utilize emotional intelligence ideas to increase self-awareness and awareness of others.
• Identify good and bad approaches to managing conflict.
• Introduce themselves and their work to people outside the occupational safety and environmental health profession.
• Strengthen their teamwork skills in sharing work problems and solutions, as a result of sharing work problems and discussing solutions with others.
• Reflect on personal leadership people skills and apply insights to adapt and improve future performance
• Analyze and appreciate one's career journey and revise future goals as needed
• Summarize highlights of the course and implement the action plan they developed during the course.
• Demonstrate self-leadership by applying strategies to manage personal goals, decisions and professional growth effectively.
Attendees will be asked to provide examples (optional) pre-course to discuss during the course.
This course will provide tools and hands-on practice to help attendees strengthen their people skills. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the importance of leadership people skills, examples of effective and ineffective behaviors, a bibliography of resources and a personalized action plan.
Business Case/IH Value Statement
Explaining and promoting the business case for industrial hygiene to management requires strong leadership and people skills. This professional development course helps attendees build those skills to effectively communicate the value of industrial hygiene and advocate for its role in organizational decision-making.
