This course covers fundamental environmental health and safety risk assessment concepts and internationally accepted terminology. Instructors will discuss exposure assessment priorities and health risk ratings.

A modified health risk rating and industrial hygiene failure mode and effect analysis methodology were developed for this course. The nanomaterials risk assessment tool will be briefly discussed, as one of the case studies includes nanomaterials.

Most risk assessment tools are linear. To address the additive or synergistic effects of multiple chemical exposures, a new industrial hygiene risk assessment tool was developed. A dermal exposure risk assessment tool is also included in the course materials.

The course concludes with a real-world case study demonstrating how occupational health risks align with the Prevention through Design risk assessment process. Participants will complete an assignment selecting one of the risk assessment techniques and demonstrating a successful risk reduction strategy.

*Registration includes boxed luncheon. **Power strips will not be provided at each attendee's seat; however, laptop charging stations will be provided in each course room.

Course Outline

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Discuss fundamental environmental health and safety risk assessment concepts.
• Introduce industrial hygiene risk assessment techniques.
• Use health risk assessments and prioritization strategies.
• Conduct chemical mixture risk assessments.
• Align occupational health risks with the Prevention through Design risk assessment process.
• Apply an industrial hygiene risk assessment model based on a real-world case study.
• Communicate the key elements of a business case for industrial hygiene interventions.

Value Added

Participants will receive interactive tools for industrial hygiene risk assessment. Additional references and publications are included.

Business Case/IH Value Statement

Industrial hygiene risk assessment, risk communication, and the financial and nonfinancial benefits of industrial hygiene intervention are significant parts of the professional development course. Participants will learn how to communicate the benefits of project improvements.
