Description

Real-time direct-reading dust instruments are increasingly used to identify exposure peaks and support immediate risk management decisions. However, gravimetric sampling remains the reference method for regulatory compliance and quantitative exposure assessment.
This session demonstrates how real-time particulate monitoring and gravimetric dust measurement can be combined into a complementary measurement strategy rather than being treated as competing approaches. Using applied industrial scenarios, the session shows how direct-reading instruments can guide sampling strategies, improve temporal resolution of exposure assessment, and support more targeted gravimetric measurements.

Participants will gain practical insights into when and how real-time dust data can meaningfully support gravimetric analysis, how discrepancies between methods can be interpreted, and how combined approaches improve decision-making in occupational exposure assessment for respirable dust, including mineral and process-related aerosols.

Tools and resources shared:
– Example workflows combining real-time monitoring and gravimetric sampling
– Practical interpretation guidance for field data
– Applied use cases from industrial environments

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion the participant will be able to…
• Differentiate between the strengths and limitations of real-time direct-reading dust instruments and gravimetric sampling methods in occupational exposure assessment.
• Apply a combined measurement strategy that uses real-time dust monitoring to optimize gravimetric sampling, improve temporal exposure understanding, and support risk-based decision-making.
• Determine the appropriate use cases for real-time dust monitoring within industrial environments.
