Despite tremendous growth in the number of women faculty in science in recent decades, there remain systemic barriers to women’s career progression and scientific success in academia. This is true of many fields, including those relevant to the OHBM. This knowledge prompted the formation of the WF-SIG. At the roundtable event we will provide an update on activities undertaken by the WF-SIG’s leadership team and events that are planned in the coming years to our members. In addition, a career panel consisting of mid-career and senior women scientists from all over the world will provide an opportunity for members to share their experiences, seek input on questions and challenges, and receive support towards building scientific careers within our community. Based on a survey conducted on the members of the WF-SIG, topics of importance to the community are 1) work/life integration, 2) leadership effectiveness and 3) strategic career development. The panel discussion will put strong emphasis on experiences, tips and strategies related to these three topics. The panel discussion will be followed by a networking event to further foster communication, collaboration and support within the WF-SIG.
1. Become familiar with challenges, barriers and factors that impact on success in the careers of women scientists, including work/life balance.
2. Explore leadership challenges which are commonly faced by women faculty and identify diverse strategies for cultivating effective and impactful leadership styles.
3. Discuss strategies and solutions to promote women’s career development in academia.
The target audience include any faculty OHBM members that self-identifies as women, trainees that self-identify as women, and those from other genders that support the goals of the WF-SIG.
