The Artist Meet and Greet session aligns with the BrainArt SIG’s mission to promote dialogue between neuroscience and art, particularly within the context of this year’s theme, Flavors of Reality. This interdisciplinary theme explores the multifaceted dimensions of reality—from materialistic to virtual, from individual to collective—and reflects on how art and neuroscience shape our understanding of the world. By hosting this session, we aim to bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and artistic exploration, encouraging attendees to reflect on the dynamic and subjective nature of reality.
The timeliness of this topic is underscored by the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on perception, creativity, and consciousness. AI challenges traditional boundaries of what is “real” and compels us to reconsider our understanding of human cognition and experience. By engaging with artists whose work addresses these themes, attendees will gain unique insights into how art extends the boundaries of science and how cultural perspectives shape our interpretation of neuroscience. This session will also highlight the contributions of Indigenous artists in collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), emphasizing the importance of diverse viewpoints in fostering a holistic understanding of reality.
1. Meet participating artists and learn about their inspiration for pieces featured in the exhibition. Reflect on the cultural and societal dimensions of creativity, including Indigenous perspectives, as they relate to neuroscience and reality.
2. Explore the interplay between neuroscience, art, and technology in shaping our concepts of consciousness and perception.
3. Engage in informal networking to foster connections between artists and scientists, some of whom are both.
The target audience includes primarily neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists attending the conference, who are inspired by the creative artistic expression and approaches to understanding brain function and the subjective nature of reality. The event will take place in the centrally located exhibition space and will function as an interactive networking opportunity rather than a formal presentation, enhancing accessibility and attendee engagement.
